The grandfather of all self-help books, which spawned an industry devoted to self-improvement, is being updated for the age of Facebook and Twitter.

Dale Carnegie’s how to Win Friends and Influence People was first published in 1936. Its updated version provides an unlikely transplant of 1930s precepts to the modern age of social media and the internet.

Three-quarters of a century after the original, how to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age has hit the shelves. out goes much of the old advice on how to impress and befriend people with face-to-face interaction or letters. instead there is advice on how bloggers should interact with their readers and a caution about how celebrities mishandle their public wrongdoings.

The original book was based on a series of lectures given by Carnegie, who had risen from an impoverished childhood in Missouri to become one of the most famous public speakers in the world.

Carnegie’s appeal was his relentlessly positive attitude and belief that cheerfully showing respect and interest in other people would reap dividends. his book was a sensation and has remained on the bestseller lists, notching up an estimated 15m sales worldwide. but how does it cope with being translated into the digital world?

Badly, according to some reviewers. the new York Times was scathing. “Were Carnegie alive to read this grievous book, he would clutch his chest … smile wanly for a few minutes (he didn’t like to make others feel bad), then keel over into his cornflakes,” wrote Dwight Garner. he slammed the use of hard-to-penetrate corporate language, adding: “So let me conclude with the good news. his original book, unmolested, can still be found on bookstore shelves.”

That sentiment chimes with many social media and PR experts. Though the world that Carnegie wrote for has changed beyond all recognition, his essential message remains relevant. “It works because he is talking about basic human characteristics: don’t lie, be forthright and pleasant. Facebook and Twitter have speeded up communication but they have not completely changed it,” said Ed Zitron, of Manhattan-based TriplePoint PR, which specialises in digital media.

Carnegie taught very simple rules of interaction, such as try to use someone’s name when talking to them or first meeting them. Listen to what they have to say and let other people do a lot of the talking when discussing your ideas. Be enthusiastic and never let an opportunity to make a new friend pass by as you never know when you might need them.

The book was aimed originally at the emerging middle classes of the 1930s and 1940s. but many experts say it is as relevant today, even though social networking rather than a handshake might be the more common way to make new contacts.

“It is all alive and well. It is still with us today,” said Marc Hoag, chief executive of Venturocket, a job search website.

He has little time for those who use the informal style of Facebook and Twitter for their communications. It might be OK to use abbreviations and poor spellings in messages between friends, but it is still not acceptable in formal communication.

“Sometimes when I get job applications it blows my mind. There are simple punctuation errors. There is still a place to be prim and proper,” Hoag said.

But there are areas where, clearly, the rules have changed. Carnegie placed a huge stress on verbal interaction and smiling. but, said Zitron: “People don’t follow people on Twitter because they are nice. they follow people because they have an authority on something.”

1319148282 56 A Day in the Life of an Internet Marketer

So you’ve heard about Internet Marketers.but what do they really do when they are ‘Internet Marketing?’ well its actually quite simple. Let me briefly show you what a normal day in the ‘office’ (make that the lounge room, patio, beach, etc) might look like.

Ok you’re working for a great company who offers continued training, support, a top class Marketing system created by Millionaires themselves, and a REAL product that stands up for itself (these things are crucial to your success by the way).

A day in the office might look something like this:

8am delicious breakfast to help get your day started (um and a coffee or two). TWEET ON TWITTER

9am Plug into some online training available through your online back-office (all set up for you so really easy to navigate and use). Listen to a Daily call (15 mins) keeping you in touch with the community of which you’re a Valued member, providing encouragement and success stories. Watch a webinar on a topic you need to touch up on or learn about (approx 45mins).

10am Follow up on leads that have come through overnight. TWEET ON TWITTER

10.30am Write a daily article on something you’ve learnt or come across, something that will benefit others.upload to various sites. We want your name out there so people get to know you as someone they can trust. We have an easy way of distributing articles all over the internet..plus Facebook, Twitter & more.

4pm Check new leads for the day. TWEET ON TWITTER. Draft another article so you’ve got a head start for tomorrow.. another half hour of posting ads, links etc. Create a short video based on one of your articles. Post on YouTube.

5pm Family time, dinner etc

You can then have the night off to spend with family or if you’re like me keep working your business and use the quiet time to post a few more ads, keep drafting some articles, bit more training etc.

It really is simple.but has great results

The life of an Internet Marketer really is a simple one. Ive given times here to give you some idea of my day, but really when you work from home, you choose the time you spend on your business. We just make sure that when we do spend time on our business, that the time is used productively and used to complete a variety of tasks for the day.

Now. I have twin babies who are 10mths old, they add a little bit of happy chaos to my day (and a 4yr old).but the whole purpose of working from home is so you can enjoy time with your kids & family, work around them, and create the lifestyle you want to create. If you want a day off? No problems Your business will just continue working for you while you rest and play You plan your day to fit with how you work best. it doesn’t get much better than that

Already have an established business? The same marketing system & strategies can be used to help grow your presence online & increase leads & sales (Ask me for more information).

Microsoft Wants To Pick Your Brain For Windows Phone Tweaks

Microsoft Wants To Pick Your Brain For Windows Phone Tweaks

1317486965 57 Microsoft Wants To Pick Your Brain For Windows Phone Tweaks

Mango has already begun to trickle out into the wild, and Microsoft is still trying to figure out exactly what their Windows Phone users want. Case in point: they’ve just unveiled their new Suggestion Box, where users can submit and vote for ideas that they would like to see implemented in Windows Phone 7.

All snark aside, it’s a much better alternative to shooting your ideas out into the ether via Twitter, as the Windows Phone Blog is quick to point out. by centralizing all of their users suggestions, Microsoft can look at potential improvements and see where user priorities lay.

Despite only being open for the past few hours, a few ideas (like the three above) are already picking up steam among the Windows Phone fanbase. for the most part, the ideas tend to range from completely reasonable (a user named DevilSpawn wants less finicky capacitive keys), to the impossible (oggyb wants all existing Windows Phones to be able to wirelessly tether, even though some devices just don’t have the hardware for it).

Out of this first batch of ideas, my favorite comes from Timo, who wants to see deep GroupMe integration in Windows Phone to “enable free global texting” to anyone. While it’ll almost certainly never happen, it’s at least theoretically possible: Skype has recently acquired GroupMe, and Microsoft not-so-recently acquired Skype.

Also interesting is the fact that Microsoft’s use of UserVoice means people won’t be able to stuff the ballot boxes. Users are limited to a total of 10 votes, and you can only give a particular submission up to 3 of them. once an idea is accepted for consideration, those votes go right back to your pile for use on another worthy submission.

With the site still in its infancy, none of the submissions have gained enough traction to warrant a further look from Team Windows Phone. Methinks Microsoft is trying to live up to their new tagline here, but let’s see if anything actually comes of it.

PERFECTLY DISHEVELED: SOLEIL MOON FRYE: HAPPY CHAOS!

PERFECTLY DISHEVELED: SOLEIL MOON FRYE: HAPPY CHAOS!

In 1984, there was really only one person I wanted to be: Soleil Moon Frye. between the world’s coolest tree house, brightly colored socks and tapered jeans, and an adoring “dad” named Henry, Punky Brewster was every little girls’ idol. When I was about 8, I did a little acting and did a commercial for the actual Punky Brewster doll (Click HERE to watch… and make fun of me). who knew that 25 years later, I would meet Soleil and get to work with her on a web series dedicated to women and moms (Btw- SIDE note, do you think anyone in the 80′s would have believed you if you said, “one day, there will be an ‘intra-net.’ And there, we will ‘tweet’ each other and search each other’s names using a ‘search engine’ called ‘goooooogle’ and we will stalk old boyfriends and like each other’s photos by being friends on a ‘social networking site’ that’s not exactly a book, but it has a lot of faces….”)

ANYWAY, I digress… SOLEIL. When we met on the set of Her Say, I was instantly impressed by her charm, spunk, and savviness– especially with social media. Not only does this busy mom have 1.4 million twitter followers, but she’s Target’s Mommy Ambassador and now a budding author.

Her book HAPPY CHAOS: from Punky to Parenting and my Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between (on sale August 23, 2011) is a refreshing take on modern parenting that encourages moms to be themselves and to embrace the inevitable madness of raising kids and living a full life. Hello, relatable!

Soleil believes that “happy chaos” is a sign of a family operating at its best– when parents accept that they’ll make mistakes, there will be messes, tears and skinned knees. in fact, just the other night she tweeted that to get one of her daughters to bed, she had to bribe her with $5. Sounds like the morning I had involving “here’s a lollipop, now please brush your teeth.”

1) You’re so busy, how did you find the time to write your book? between kids, work, and marriage, did you have to stick to a schedule?

I’m so crazed during the day with the kids and juggling work, that my time to sit down and write ends up being the middle of the night. I’m lucky because I am often inspired at midnight icon smile PERFECTLY DISHEVELED: SOLEIL MOON FRYE: HAPPY CHAOS! hard part is living on 3 or 4 hours of sleep.

2) My motto in parenting has definitely become “Whatever works.” what are some of the things you thought you’d never/always do (always organic, never TV etc) that went right out of the window the minute you had kids and life got a little crazier?

I always thought that I’d be this super laid back hippie mama and then when I had kids, I realized that we aren’t always the parents we think we will be before we have children. Now I try to find the balance in everything so while I buy my kid’s wooden natural toys, they also play with Barbies.

3) We’ve talked a lot about unplugging and how technology can get in the way of a relationship. How has technology affected your parenting? do your daughters understand your connection and time spent on Twitter/ Facebook etc?

My girls are obsessed with technology. Jagger literally goes up to the Television and tries to move it as if it were an iPad. We try our best to balance so when we are having dinner or having quality time with our children we put away the devices.

4) Let’s talk clothes. You’re always so put together and cute. How much thought goes in to what you put on? Are your wardrobe decisions based on body, function, kids, work, etc?

I’m lucky if I walk out of the door without my clothes on inside out! if I ever have to get all dolled up, you can bet that on my way out the door in my tallest fanciest shoes, I will 100% hit the floor.

5) Okay, I saw recently that your number one crush in the ’80′s was “Jake” from 16 Candles (Once again, I knew that we had so much in common). but I’m dying to know, as a child/teen star yourself (in the 80′s & 90′s) were your walls also covered with Tiger Beat, Bop, Teen Beat etc.? who were the boys that covered your walls?

I had head shots all over my wall. I was actually just looking at pictures of my room from that time period and I had a hot pink neon light and the walls were covered with everyone from Johnny Depp to James Dean. Lots of Boys. I was truly boy crazy.
